Former Nilagiri MLA Akshaya Kumar Acharya passes away at 76, leaves behind rich legacy of development
Bhubaneswar, Jan 2: Akshaya Kumar Acharya, former Congress MLA from the Nilagiri constituency and a key figure in the region’s development, passed away on Friday at the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital. He was 76. His demise has cast a pall of gloom over Nilagiri and surrounding areas, where he was widely respected for his public service.
According to reports, Acharya had been battling cancer for a prolonged period and was undergoing treatment in Mumbai. In the early hours of Friday, his health suddenly deteriorated, following which he was rushed to a nearby hospital in Nilagiri. As his condition worsened, he was shifted to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital, where he breathed his last while undergoing treatment.
Fondly known as the ‘Development Man’ of Nilagiri, Acharya was elected as MLA twice, in 1980 and 1995. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in transforming the constituency by initiating several landmark development projects. These included the construction of a modern bus stand, establishment of Notified Area Councils (NACs), development of dams and irrigation facilities, and the setting up of schools and colleges.
His lasting contributions earned him immense respect across political lines. Leaders, supporters, and residents have expressed deep grief over his passing. Acharya is survived by his family.
