Odisha launches statewide midwinter bird census

Bhubaneswar, Jan 18: The Odisha government commenced its extensive midwinter bird census on Saturday, spanning all 52 forest divisions across the state. This initiative seeks to document both indigenous and migratory bird species, enhancing understanding of Odisha’s diverse avifauna.
Key bird habitats like Chilika Lake, Bhitarkanika National Park, and Hirakud Dam are receiving special attention due to their significant bird populations. To ensure thorough coverage, 21 teams are deployed in Chilika and Hirakud, while 18 teams are stationed at Bhitarkanika.
Each team comprises an ornithologist, forest personnel, and 5-6 additional members, including bird experts, forest officials, and volunteers. Equipped with cameras and binoculars, they aim to accurately count and identify bird species. Preparations included a mock drill conducted on Thursday.
To protect migratory birds, the Chilika Wildlife Division has established 21 temporary bird protection camps, staffed by 48 temporary personnel. Each camp is manned by a forest guard and watcher, ensuring round-the-clock vigilance.
The census reflects Odisha’s commitment to wildlife conservation and ecological balance.
